The Skylight Terrace renovation project focused on enhancing the primary living areas of a four storey terrace in Paddington, Sydney. The kitchen, living, bathroom, laundry and cellar were located on the lowest level, which lacked natural daylight and felt compressed due to the deep plan and low ceiling height. The brief called for ample storage, an island bench for the kitchen and plenty of natural light.
To draw natural light into the deep and narrow plan, the living room ceiling was raked to the rear of the site to capture uninterrupted views of the sky through a full-width skylight. The existing staircase was reconfigured to streamline the circulation and establish a new circulation route that created space for a large island bench. The southern party wall was transformed into a spine of joinery, hiding away the essentials of everyday living and creating a subtle visual rhythm that connected and united the spaces.
The minimal material palette included white walls, ceilings, and joinery with concrete bench tops and timber floors that added warmth to the space. The mirror splashback created an illusion of more space and reflected natural light deeper into the plan.
The renovation resulted in a theatrical and playful living area that was perfect for family life. Overall, the Skylight Terrace renovation project was successful in creating a beautiful and functional living space for a family with young and energetic boys.
